Stair Climb
March 31, 2008

Here’s one more picture from our weekend Stair Climb for the American Lung Association.
Check out the pre-climb energy sources:

Ashley has Gatorade, Andrew goes for some sort of energy juice drink…. and Tom and I went for pure Starbucks. ; )

Made It Half Way
March 29, 2008

Here are the two main people who talked me into participating in the American Lung Association’s Second Annual Stair Climb at the Gulf Tower downtown. ; )
You know, I think John and Lara are both grinning here because they realize that for the rest of the day I’ll have a little trouble walking.
We tripled the turnout from last year…. and it was painful and fun all at the same time.
This is a great project because it actually gives those raising money the feeling that they have a problem breathing. No matter how in-shape you are.. you will be gasping for breath at the top (or in my case, the middle… I stopped at the 19th floor other reached the 38th and did 760 steps) and it makes you realize how important the ability to breath is.

Here is my team photo.
I really brought the team time down since everyone else made it all the way to the top.
Here’s Andrew…. and yes, he is wearing firefighters gear.

He actually wore firefighters gear and joined the fire crew’s team.
I wanted sooooo badly to make fun of him… but, he made it all the way to the top and came back smiling.
Here he is with Big Joe from WDVE.

Now, take a deep breath and think about these facts from the ALA:

* almost 20 million Americans suffer from asthma,

* Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S.,

* The average person breathes 3,000 gallons of air each day, 88% of Pennsylvania’s population live in areas earning at least one failing grade for either ground-level ozone smog or particle pollution,

* More than 35 million Americans are living with chronic lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

* Smoking kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined.

I started off first for my team… and before the third flight, I think each of my team members passed me.
I remember smiling for the news camera on the second level…. and leaning over to yell down at Tom to smile for the camera…. but as I leaned over to yell… I realized he was already passing me!
Ashley joined me in stopping at 19 flights…. but she beat my time by about 50 seconds!
Here’s our boss, Bob Longo registering.
He had a fantastic time… as in a fantastic score….. hopefully, he won’t make fun of me on Monday at work when I have to take the elevator up to the newsroom.
And for the second straight year… Assistant News Director Roberta Petterson joined us.
She is way toooo in shape! Next year I have to get Roberta on my team! She had a great time.. both as in her recorded time was fast…. and she had a fun time being there.
Photographer Gary Morris captured everything on his camera and I’m sure somehow Shannon Perrine will mention on the news tonight… that it was no big surprise that I had the worst race time of anyone at Channel Four… ha ha ha ha ha…

Melanie, You’ll be fighting traffic!
March 28, 2008

Melanie Taylor is soooo loved! Today is her last day with us… she’s moving on back to her former radio station.

Melanie, You’re a pro with an awesome personality and it’s been a pleasure working with you…. but I have to tell you, I may giggle just a little bit when *you’re* the one stuck in traffic! ; ) …. best wishes, and please call in for a live “phoner” when your sitting in traffic on your way to work. ha ha ha ha…. I’ll be listening!

Please come out and join us tomorrow for our Stair Climb at the Gulf Tower downtown on Grant and 7th. I’ll be there at 7:30 and the climb starts at 8:30. Ashley DiParlo and Andrew Stockey will there …. and so will several of my bosses. It’s all to raise money for the American Lung Association. Try breathing through a straw for about two minutes and see how you do. That’s why curing lung disease is so important.

I’m going to write more this weekend about the cool gift basket company my friend, Laurie, is working for now. I’m still eating some of the wonderful treats! (hey, that’s the best cinnamon bread ever)

Also next week, Jennifer Miele, our Westmoreland County bureau chief moves into Channel Four’s new office in
Greensburg. She’s promising to send me pictures of the new bureau and I’ll post them when she does.

Make-up and Math / Science and Skin Care
March 27, 2008

Our wonderful meteorologist Erin Kienzle is volunteering with an awesome program and I couldn’t wait to share it here. It’s something started by the Carnegie Science Center.. and it’s become so popular it’s spreading nationally. It’s designed to get girls more interested in science and math by showing a connection to something that interests them.

Make-up and skin care do the trick!

It’s called The Girls Science and Math Partnership for 11- 17 year olds.
Here’s the executive director Jen Stancil – making chapstick.

Here are some of the participants in SciTech Days at the Carnegie Science Center. Erin loves volunteering with the program. She also told me about a summer partnership with Carnegie Mellon called CSI which works with girls and sends them text messages through the city so they can solve mysteries. What fun! I have to get some more information on that for you.

I know I would have paid better attention in science and math had we done experiments with make up and skin care.
Erin gave me some interesting make up facts:

61 —- percentage of name-brand lipstick containing lead

4 lbs —— amount of lipstick the average woman INGESTS in her lifetime

50 billion —– dollars spent on personal care products yearly

63—– percent of American girls younger than 10 who report using lipstick

For more cool facts and an awesome summer camp for girls… click here. If you have a teenage or preteen daughter I highly recommend you sending them to this website….
I am signing my daughter up as soon as she’s old enough!

Troy’s Hair
March 25, 2008

You have to check out the story I’ve been working on all day.

It’s about Troy Polamalu and his hair.
Today we found out the NFL will consider at the end of the month a new rule which would prohibit players’ hair from covering up their names on the jerseys.  So we wondered what Troy would look like with a new ‘do.
Click here to see our slideshow of various hair options…. and vote on your favorite.

And a big thanks to Pat in our Art Department for a wonderful job!

Click here for details We’ll be at the Gulf Tower in downtown Pittsburgh this Saturday March 29. Sign in begins at 7:30 and the climb starts at 8:30 am.

If you can’t climb…. no worries… just come join us for a great time for a great cause.

Assaulted Nut …… and Tap Dancers …..

Hanging out with the Coach
March 24, 2008

Here’s a look at our awesome time at the Pittsburgh Penguins fundraiser. It’s part of the Skates and Plates event to raise money to fight cystic fibrosis. Here are: Jim Lokay, Janelle Hall, Coach Michel Therrien, me, and Ashley Diparlo.  It was held at the Carnegie Museum and all the players were dressed in tuxedos and served dinner to everyone there. There were lots of autographs given out. What a fun night!  Right now, my son watches every game and plays hockey along with the team. He is destroying all of the baseboards in the gameroom. I couldn’t help but wonder if he saw the players all dressed up if he’d be more willing to wear a tie. ; )

Happy Easter at Action News
March 21, 2008

Happy Easter.

Here’s what the bunny brought to Action News:
I think our loyal friends Theresa and Diane had a little something to do with the delivery.
It didn’t take long for people to start digging in.
Here’s director Bob checking out all the goodies.

Producer Tom looks surprised that we’re catching him red-handed.
Photographer Gary loved it.

Basket Affair
March 21, 2008

When we pulled up to our house today…. my kids started screaming… “We have a present on the front porch!”
It’s from my friend Laurie. She is working for a local company called Basket Affair. You can order a gazillion different kinds of treats and specialty baskets.
What a fun surprise.
I’ll post more on the beautiful and yummy treats later on today. But I wanted to hurry up and post it now in case some of you need a nice and quick Easter basket today… you may want to check them out now. There are lots of options, Steelers, Baby, Pasta, Pittsburgh, sweets…. and on and on. So click here to find out more from the website.
Be sure to ask for my friend, Laurie M.
And here are some more pictures we took from Mr McFeely’s visit to our newsroom.
We loved it!

Sweater Day
March 20, 2008

I made everyone in the newsroom stop what they were doing to gather around for a Sweater Day picture. From the left is: Connie, Maria, Wendy, Jackie, and Becky. News director Bob Longo and Executive producer Jennifer Sloan are in the back and Producer Tom is in the front.  Many more people wore sweaters to work today… but these were the people closest to me when I had a chance to take a photo.

As I showed you before, Mr McFeely came to the newsroom yesterday to remind us to participate.
We have had a lot of very important people come through our newsroom in the 14 years I worked here. Politicians, professional athletes, the famous and the infamous….. But never have I seen reaction to anyone like I did yesterday with Mr McFeely. Most of the people in our newsroom grew up in the Pittsburgh area….. many more grew up watching Mr Rogers Neighborhood.  We all felt like special young children with Mr McFeely there…. even in the middle of our busy news day.   I am so proud that he and Fred Rogers represent Pittsburgh.
When I interviewed Mr McFeely, I asked him what we should all be thinking about when we put on our sweaters today. He said Fred would have wanted us to think about the children because children need to know they are special and children are our future.
     What a blessing!
Oh, I should tell you that last “If celebrities were your neighbors” picture I posted was of Nicole Kidman.
Still to come:    Easter basket ideas,   a picture with us and Pens coach Michel Therrien,   a book so good it’s worth fighting for,   and some interesting photos with other meanings.   I’ll give you a preview of the “guess the real meaning” photos now.
Study the picture and try to find out the message behind each photo before you scroll down for the answer. (More are on the way.)

Wear a Sweater!
March 20, 2008

Don’t forget to wear a sweater today in honor of Mr Rogers.

Mr McFeely stopped by our newsroom yesterday to deliver some sweaters to remind us.
Here he is with our producer Kevin.
He came during our busiest time of the day…. about 4:15…. and somehow he managed to calm us all down. Everyone wanted an autograph and a picture.
Mr McFeely is amazing… and so was his dear friend, Fred Rogers.
What a difference he’s made in so many lives.
I’ll write more about his visit later today and take some photos of my coworkers participating.
Right now, we’re off to the school bus stop… I just wanted to send out a quick reminder.

Happy Birthday Katherine!
March 19, 2008

Today is my friend Katherine’s birthday. For those of you who’ve been reading my blog for a while …. you know she’s my friend in San Francisco. She worked here at Channel 4 for a while before moving out west.

  Happy Birthday Katherine!
I have so many stories that would embarrass her…. but I’ll settle for putting this video of her on my blog……. ; )

   And I need your help.
I’m trying to find cool Easter baskets for a 9 and 7 year old.
Everything I’ve seen pre-made is for younger children… and I’m at a loss for good ideas.
If anyone has any suggestions…. I’m all ears (I should say bunny ears to go with  my Easter theme)
And I finally got the photos from my night out at the Pens fundraiser.
   I’ll post those tomorrow.

Yes She Is!
March 18, 2008

  Yes, Wendy is pregnant.
She’s due in mid-August and we’re all thrilled for her.
I got three emails yesterday asking about it. One guy told me to please not mention to her that he asked if she’s not pregnant because he didn’t want to hurt her feelings.
I have admit.. it was pretty tempting to write back something like:
“…. I’ve been wondering the same thing, but was too scared to ask.”
   or.. “What? I haven’t noticed!”
   or simply ” I don’t think so… she hasn’t mentioned it.”
Oh, come on. You know that’s funny. ; )
Wendy refused to let me go with it.
In other Wendy news, she’s been nagging me about my ring.  It’s beautiful and sometimes after washing my hands a million times a day (like all moms must do) …. the ring isn’t as sparkly as it should be. The soap from the dispenser at work leaves a gooey residue.  So Andrew let me try one of his Test it Tuesday products. But then I found out he only gave it one star.  I tried it anyway, and just as he said, it didn’t work very well. So instead I got  a little brush and cleaned it with hot water. It looks beautiful now…. and Wendy is happy.
And finally, this is my wonderful friend Bonnie’s birthday! She’s a great friend and a great person.
Happy Birthday Bonnie!  Maybe when I get to work I’ll find a picture to put on this blog to embarrass you. ; )

One more……
March 15, 2008

Since I got so many responses on what celebrities would look like if they were your neighbors post, I thought you’d like another…
Here’s one for the weekend:
